Student Ball 2010

The Student Ball is a formal ball or retention of students who have completed the upper secondary school. It is held at the end of the final school year, as a farewell dinner with traditional festivities, which occur when one graduates (takes the studenten). Boys usually dress in black or white formal clothes, regardless of the time of the event, sometimes also with brightly colored ties or bow-ties with vests. Most items are rented from stores that specialize in formal wear rentals. Girls wear traditional dresses. They may purchase their prom dresses from specialized shops, boutiques, or internet retailers. There are many specialty labels selling prom dresses that release new collections each prom season.

The students usually pair off for the Prom, occasionally they go alone or they go in threes. Before the Prom they get together for instance at someone’s home to have their photographs taken. One tradition in Skellefteå is to be photographed at Bonnstan or in the Nordanåparken because of the beautiful scenery. Prom students may rent vintage cars, horse carts or sometimes a limousine to transport them from their homes to the Prom venue. There, the students go down a red carpet, greeted by hundreds of spectators, and as they walk down amidst the crowd of family and friends they are introduced and photographed getting their well deserved time in the limelight.

At the Prom, a meal is served and after that the dance begins, there may either be a DJ or a live band playing the music. When the Prom is finished, the students can go to a  a “Post Prom Party” at a restaurant. During the student ball a “king” and a “queen”of the ball are elected. These titles are very prestigious and all people present get involved in the vote. The party tends to be finished by 2 o’clock at night …
